Germany in Winter: Three Cities, Countless Stories

February has a way of revealing Germany at its most authentic.

Without the crowds of summer, the country slows down just enough to appreciate its remarkable history, elegant architecture, and warm hospitality. During an unforgettable week exploring Munich, Berlin, and Frankfurt, I discovered a destination that is far more diverse than many travellers expect.

Travelling aboard Germany’s remarkably efficient ICE trains, it was effortless to move between three cities, each with its own distinct personality. In less than a week, I experienced royal palaces, centuries of history, innovative cuisine, luxury hotels, and reminders of Germany’s resilience and reinvention.

Munich – Bavarian Elegance

Munich immediately feels welcoming.

Its grand boulevards, historic squares and café culture are balanced beautifully by an easy-going Bavarian charm. Staying at The Charles Hotel, one of Rocco Forte’s flagship properties, provided the perfect base to explore the city. The service was impeccable, while Sophia’s Restaurant quickly became one of my favourite dining experiences of the trip.

One of the highlights was visiting magnificent Nymphenburg Palace, once the summer residence of Bavarian royalty. Wandering through its opulent rooms before visiting the historic Porcelain Manufactory offered a fascinating glimpse into centuries of craftsmanship and royal tradition. Later, strolling through Munich’s historic centre reminded me how effortlessly the city blends old-world charm with sophisticated modern living.

Berlin – Where History Comes Alive

Berlin tells its story unlike anywhere else.

Every neighbourhood reveals another chapter of Germany’s past while celebrating its vibrant future. Exploring the city with expert local guides brought history into sharp focus, particularly during our Cold War tour, where remnants of the Berlin Wall and stories of divided families transformed history books into deeply personal experiences.

Lunch at the legendary Hotel Adlon was a memorable pause before continuing our exploration on foot through streets filled with remarkable architecture, museums, monuments and hidden courtyards. Even a traditional Baumkuchen tasting became a reminder that Germany’s culinary traditions are every bit as rich as its history.

Our stay at Hotel de Rome perfectly reflected Berlin itself being historic on the outside yet contemporary, stylish and vibrant within.

Frankfurt – More Than Germany’s Financial Capital

Many travellers overlook Frankfurt, but they shouldn’t.

Yes, it is Germany’s financial centre, yet beneath its impressive skyline lies a city filled with charming squares, riverside promenades and beautifully restored historic districts.

A leisurely walking tour revealed a destination that balances innovation with tradition, while Villa Kennedy offered an elegant retreat after days spent exploring. It was a wonderful reminder that even business cities can possess remarkable warmth and character.

The Luxury of Slow Travel

One of the greatest surprises wasn’t any one city—it was travelling between them.

Germany’s high-speed ICE rail network makes exploring multiple destinations remarkably easy. Watching snow-covered countryside pass by from the comfort of a first-class carriage was as enjoyable as arriving at each new destination. The journey became part of the experience rather than simply transportation.

Germany often finds itself overshadowed by Italy or France, but after this journey, I left convinced it deserves a place on every traveller’s wish list.
